I listened to this right after doing Sammy Johns' "Chevy Van", and this song is its polar opposite: "Chevy Van" was about a casual encounter, and this is about a happy long-term committed relationship. Except for wincing a bit at the start when Freddie Hart sings "so sexy looking", I found that I liked this; it reminds me a lot of Jamaican rocksteady songs from about this time, as the chord structures are similar. I'm surprised somebody didn't cover it and release it on Trojan Records.
Freddie Hart, born Frederick Segrest (1926-2018), had only one pop chart hit but had a long career in country music. He was born in Loachapoka, Alabama, and was one of 12 children; in 1941, he lied about his age and joined the Marine Corps in the Second World War. After the war, he taught classes in self-defense at the Los Angeles Police Academy before becoming successful in his music career.
Hart recorded his first country single in 1953 but didn't reach the U.S. country charts until 1959. He placed nine songs in the country top 30 before breaking through with "Easy Loving", which reached #1 on the country chart and #17 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the start of a very successful run on the country charts for Hart; five of his next six releases reached #1 and 13 more reached the top 20, with his run of success extending to 1977.
Hart last placed a song on the country charts in 1987. In the 21st century, he switched to recording gospel music. Among other honours, he is a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
