In this song, our hero protagonist manages to get laid in his van. Good for him, I guess. If the van is rockin', don't go knocking! This is another song I hadn't heard in nearly half a century; I recall disliking it intensely. Listening to it again, I did like the harmonies, which allowed me to get through about half of the song before wanting it to go away.
Sammy Johns (1946-2013) was from Charlotte, North Carolina. "Chevy Van" reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, sold over three million copies, and led to an increase in van sales the following year (though not necessarily an increase in people getting busy in vans).
Johns went on to produce the soundtrack for the 1977 film The Van and to write songs that were covered by Waylon Jennings and Conway Twitty, among others; Jennings' version of Johns' "America" was nominated for country song of the year in 1985.
