This is a little bit of British whimsy, from roughly the same music gene pool as The Scaffold and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. I like the Bonzos' stuff better but I did manage to make it through this.
The New Vaudeville Band was a collection of British studio musicians organized by songwriter/producer Geoff Stephens to record "Winchester Cathedral", which he wrote. To everyone's surprise, it became a hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 in the UK. Stephens had to scramble to create an actual New Vaudeville Band to perform at live shows.
The band reached the UK singles chart and the lower parts of the Billboard chart three times in 1967 before splitting up in 1968. A new version of The New Vaudeville Band was in existence in the 1970s and 1980s; this lineup contained no original members.
