The Scaffold were an English group that produced cheerful and eccentric comic songs and poetry. They were similar in style to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, who started at about the same time. Their most successful song, "Lily The Pink", based on an old folk ballad titled "The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham", reached #1 in Britain.
"Thank U Very Much" reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was written by Scaffold member Mike McGear, who is Paul McCartney's younger brother. He chose a stage name so that people would not think that he was trading on his older brother's fame. I did notice, though, that when McGear sings higher notes, he does sound like his brother, which is understandable.
The Scaffold broke up in 1977 but have periodically reformed since. McGear later became a professional photographer and author, using his real name in this phase of his career, because why not?
