The Mirettes were the first official incarnation of The Ikettes, who were backing singers for Ike and Tina Turner. As the Ikettes, they had a couple of charting singles, including "Peaches "N" Cream", which is included on this website. When they didn't receive extra money for them and were forced to stay with Ike's revue while a different set of Ikettes went out on tour with Dick Clark's Cavalcade Of Stars, they split from him and went their own way.
The Mirettes' version of "In The Midnight Hour" reached #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 on the R&B chart. The song was written by Steve Cropper (of Booker T and The MG's) and Wilson Pickett; Pickett's original version, recorded in 1965, is six different kinds of awesome but did not receive any airplay in Toronto. The Mirettes' version of "In The Midnight Hour" isn't as good as Pickett's, but it's such a wonderful song that it's hard to do a really bad version of it. (The most unusual version of "In The Midnight Hour" was recorded by The Jam back when they were playing everything at about 200 miles an hour.) The Mirettes' version features some funky fuzztone late 1960s guitar riffs, so there's that.
The Mirettes did not have any charting singles after "In The Midnight Hour". They broke up in 1971.
