The Ikettes - Peaches "N" Cream

May 1965 - Weeks On Chart: 7 - Highest Position: 25

The Ikettes were the backing singers for the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Over the years, there were a number of Ikettes, but their first official incarnation consisted of Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Smith, and Venetta Fields. It was these three women who recorded "Peaches "N" Cream", which reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

This version of The Ikettes eventually left to form The Mirettes, who also appear on this website. Ike Turner then went and hired more Ikettes. Some of their later incarnations made it to the lower reaches of the Billboard chart.

Over the years, a total of 57 women were Ikettes, if only briefly (assuming I counted it right). One of them was Bonnie Bramlett, later of Delaney & Bonnie fame, who was an Ikette for three days when she was 17. She wore a dark wig and darkened her skin so that people would not know that she was white.
