The Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life

April 1970 - Weeks On Chart: 8 - Highest Position: 7

This is a wistful and melodramatic song that I have always liked.

The Marmalade were from Scotland and were originally known as Dean Ford and The Gaylords, releasing four singles under that name between 1964 and 1966. Changing their name to The Marmalade, they reached the top ten in the UK singles chart seven times between 1968 and 1972, including a #1 hit in 1968 with their cover of the Beatles' "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da", which is a faithful copy of the original.

"Reflections Of My Life" was their only significant North American hit, selling over two million copies and reaching #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 nationally in Canada; it reached #3 in Britain. Their followup, "Rainbow", also reached #3 in Britain but only #51 in the US and #36 in Canada. It's less melodramatic than its immediate predecessor and is a pleasant bit of acoustic guitar, harmonica, and multi-part harmony.

The band renamed itself from The Marmalade to just Marmalade in 1973 and had one more British top ten hit in 1974 with "Falling Apart at the Seams" before falling apart at the seams. The band still exists as of this writing but with none of its original members. Original lead singer Dean Ford, whose birth name was Thomas McAleese, passed away in 2018.

Created April 28, 2026.
