I thought this was clever and well constructed but a bit cute and annoying. It's typical of its time, I guess.
Ike Clanton (1940-2004) was born Clyde Gordon Clanton; he took his stage name because there was an 19th century outlaw named Ike Clanton. The musician Ike Clanton was the younger brother of Jimmy Clanton, who had several hit singles between 1958 and 1962 (including seven entries on the CHUM chart). He also played in backing bands for John Fred and Duane Eddy.
"Sugar Plum" did much better in Toronto than in most places in North America, as it reached only #95 on the Billboard Hot 100. Clanton doesn't seem to have done that much on his own. The Vancouver Pop Music website has a brief biography of him.
