This song features a vaguely Latin rhythm interspersed with somebody moaning or breathing heavily at random. I remember it from growing up; when I heard it all these years later, my first thought was that it is deeply weird.
The Chakachas were from a district of Brussels in Belgium. When they formed in the late 1950s, they started out playing Cuban cha-cha-cha music, took up the Twist craze for a bit, then graduated to Latin soul. "Jungle Fever" reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies but was banned by the BBC shortly after release because of all the moaning and breathing.
This was the only significant success that the band had. "Jungle Fever" has been often been featured in movies or sampled by artists, especially if they are looking to include moaning and heavy breathing. Bandleader Gaston Bogaerts passed away in 2022 at the age of 101.
