Cyril Stapleton - The Children's Marching Song

February 1959 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 2

Whether you like this song depends on whether you enjoy listening to children sing. I don't, particularly, but that might just be me.

Cyril Stapleton (1914-1974) was an English violinist and bandleader. He was the leader of the BBC Show Band in the 1950s and was therefore heard in broadcasts across Britain.

When the BBC disbanded its Show Band, Stapleton assembled the Cyril Stapleton Orchestra. Their recording of the traditional English language children's song called "The Children's Marching Song" here, but often known as "This Old Man", reached #13 on the Billboard pop chart. They also reached #25 in 1956 with "The Italian Theme". Stapleton continued to record and perform into the 1970s.

Created December 3, 2025.
