The Spacemen - The Clouds

December 1959 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 17

This is basically a piano soloing over a swing beat. It's catchy but I'm not sure I want to listen to it twice.

"The Spacemen" was a band name used by Sammy Benskin (1922-1992), a pianist and bandleader from The Bronx. He worked with various jazz musicians in the 1940s and 1950s before later becoming a vocal coach and producer.

"The Clouds" reached #41 on the Billboard 100 pop chart but made it all the way to #1 on the R&B chart. It was released on the Alton record label, which was owned by Julius Dixson, an African-American; it became the first #1 record on an African-American owned record label, one year before Motown Records did it.

Created December 11, 2025.
