Cliff Nobles & Co. - The Horse

June 1968 - Weeks On Chart: 7 - Highest Position: 11

I had never heard this before but parts of it sound familiar, so maybe I have heard it and had just forgotten it. It seems pleasant enough but I saw no need to play all of it.

Cliff Nobles (1941-2008) was a soul singer from Grove Hill, Alabama. He moved to Philadelphia and formed a group named Cliff Nobles & Co. Their second single was "Love Is All Right", which was a harmless bit of soul music. Its flip side, "The Horse", was the instrumental track of this song; it was this B-side that caught on as a hit under Nobles' name, even though he was the singer in his band and did not play on the track. The horn section that played on this track eventually became known as MFSB.

"The Horse" made it all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. His label continued releasing instrumentals performed by the band on which he didn't sing either; two of them reached the top 100 in Canada. In later life, Nobles worked in construction and in the electricity industry.
