This is three minutes and 26 seconds of old-school soul goodness. The world is a better place because this song is in it.
Garnet Mimms (born 1933) grew up in Philadelphia. The Enchanters formed there in 1961 and moved to New York in 1963. "Cry Baby", their first single, was written by Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy, and featured the Gospelaires on backing vocals, whose members included Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over one million copies.
Mimms, either with The Enchanters or without, reached the Hot 100 eight more times between 1963 and 1966, including twice more in the top 30, but did not get any more airplay in Toronto. Later in life, he became a born-again Christian minister, specializing in providing ministry services to prisoners.
