I would describe this song as "catchy but frenetic".
As high school students in Los Angeles, Jan Berry, Arnie Ginsburg, and Dean Torrence formed a doo-wop group together and then later rehearsed "Jennie Lee" in Berry's family's garage. When Torrence was drafted into the United States Army Reserve, Jan and Arnie recorded the song together.
"Jennie Lee" was a tribute song honouring burlesque dancer Virginia Lee Hicks, who performed as Jennie Lee. It reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958. Jan & Arnie released two other singles without success.
Shortly after this, Ginsburg became fed up with the music business and went to school to study architectural design. By then, Torrence had returned from his army service and he and Berry started recording as Jan and Dean, becoming extremely famous and successful.
