Inez and Charlie Foxx - Mockingbird

August 1963 - Weeks On Chart: 13 - Highest Position: 1

I had never heard this version of "Mockingbird" before now - I quite enjoyed it. The record label lists just Inez Foxx because the record company wanted to promote her as a solo singer, but both Foxxes are clearly on the track.

Inez and Charlie Foxx were brother and sister, and were from Greensboro, North Carolina. They wrote "Mockingbird", which was an adaptation of the children's lullaby "Hush Little Baby", and took it to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over a million copies.

James Taylor and Carly Simon released their cover version of "Mockingbird" in 1974; it reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the CHUM Chart. This song has also been covered by Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Australian singer Johnny O'Keefe, and the Belle Stars, among others.

The Foxxes, and Inez as a solo artist, reached the lower parts of the Billboard 100 chart a few times after this but did not achieve any significant success. Her last single release was in 1974. Charlie Foxx passed away in 1998 and Inez Foxx passed away in 2022.
