I first started listening to AM radio about 1970 or 1971, so it's fascinating to me that this is the first time I have ever heard a song that reached #1 in 1968. My thought when I heard it was that it reminded me a bit of The Seekers.
Four Jacks and a Jill were from South Africa. "Master Jack" reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968 and made it to #1 in a few countries, including Canada and South Africa. Subsequent releases didn't chart significantly outside of South Africa but they did have some hits there.
Later in their career, Four Jacks and a Jill created songs for sing-along educational story books for South African charities. Their most recent release appears to have been in 2013.
