The Caravelles - You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry

December 1963 - Weeks On Chart: 9 - Highest Position: 14

This is one of the last hit songs from the era before recordings were more heavily produced. This is one minute and 53 seconds of lo-fi reverb goodness - I found it charming.

The Caravelles were two teenage girls from England: Lois Wilkinson, who was 19 at the time this song was released, and Andrea Simpson, who was 17. "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry" was originally written in 1950 and was performed at that time by Moon Mullican, Jimmy Dorsey, and Ernest Tubb. The Caravelles' version reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the UK singles chart.

The Caravelles released singles through 1968 without success. Ms. Wilkinson recorded a solo album under the name "Lois Lane" in 1968. Ms. Simpson performed as The Caravelles with other musicians into the 1990s. They are both still alive as I write this, if Wikipedia is to be believed.
