B. Bumble & The Stingers - Bumble Boogie

April 1961 - Weeks On Chart: 10 - Highest Position: 5

When I heard this, it took me a bit to recall what it reminded me of. Then I realized that it was "Pipeline" by The Chantays. The songs are similar enough that I am reasonably certain that The Chantays' song was inspired by this one.

"Bumble Boogie" was a swing jazz adaptation of "Flight Of The Bumblebee" and was first recorded in 1946 by Freddy Martin and his orchestra. The B. Bumble & The Stingers version was recorded by a group of session musicians and reached #21 on the Billboard charts. Since the musicians who recorded it were too busy with studio dates to tour, a group of teenagers from Ada, Oklahoma, was recruited to perform it live.

B. Bumble & The Stingers (the studio version) reached #1 in the UK and #23 on the Billboard chart in 1962 with "Nut Rocker", which was an adaptation of a march from the ballet The Nutcracker. They recorded some other singles after that without any success and then went back to being musicians for hire.

Created January 30, 2026.
