This song vaguely rang a bell - I might have heard it many years ago, back before I reached the age of legal adulthood (which, for me, happened in 1978, sigh). It's a bit like early Yes or King Crimson, but with a harder edge and a bit less whimsical cleverness. It's very much a period piece.
Bubble Puppy were from San Antonio, Texas. "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass" reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but subsequent releases were unsuccessful. In 1972, the band changed their name to Demian, believing that "Bubble Puppy" was a name more suited to a bubblegum pop band. They didn't do any better under that name and soon broke up.
