George B. Cutten

Toronto Daily Star, August 13 1931

George Barton Cutten (1874-1962) was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Before becoming president of Colgate University in 1922 - a post he held until 1942 - he was president of Acadia University.

Unfortunately, Cutten was also a eugenicist and a racist, saying things such as "The danger the melting pot brings to the nation is the breeding out of the higher division of the white race and the breeding in of the lower divisions." He blocked university admissions from African-Americans and severely limited the intake of Jewish students. For this reason, a university residence originally named after him was renamed in 2017.

Created September 25, 2025.
